At-Home Training

At-Home vs. In-Office Neurofeedback: A Detailed Comparison

The core difference: supervision and access

The fundamental difference between at-home and in-office neurofeedback is not technology — it's the level of real-time clinical supervision. In-office sessions are conducted by your clinician, who can monitor your responses in real time, adjust electrode placement, troubleshoot signal quality, and notice subtle changes that might indicate a need to adjust the protocol.

At-home sessions use the same core neurofeedback technology, but the clinician reviews your session data remotely — typically through regular virtual check-ins — rather than being present in the room.

When in-office is the better choice

In-office training is strongly recommended for new patients who haven't yet established their protocol, clients with complex or severe presentations, those with significant anxiety about the process who benefit from face-to-face support, and any client undergoing initial QEEG assessment. The first phase of any neurofeedback program should always involve in-office sessions to establish the right protocol and ensure you're responding as expected.

When at-home training shines

At-home training becomes a powerful tool once your protocol is established and your brain is responding well. The ability to train 4–5 times per week — rather than the 2–3 sessions most people can realistically schedule in-office — often accelerates progress significantly. For clients who have completed a core in-office program and want to maintain or continue improving, at-home training is frequently the most cost-effective and convenient option.

It's also ideal for clients with mobility limitations, those who live farther from our clinics, or those with demanding schedules.
