20 Neurofeedback Questions Patients Ask Most — Answered
Safety and basics
Is neurofeedback safe? Yes. Sensors only read electrical activity — nothing is sent into your brain. It has been researched for over 40 years with an excellent safety profile across all ages.
Is it painful or uncomfortable? No. The sensors rest gently on your scalp with a small amount of conductive gel. Most people find sessions deeply relaxing.
Can children do neurofeedback? Yes — it has been used safely with children as young as 4 years old. We adapt sessions for younger clients.
Effectiveness
Does neurofeedback actually work? There is a substantial body of peer-reviewed research supporting neurofeedback for ADHD, anxiety, PTSD, sleep disorders, and cognitive function in aging adults. Effects are clinically meaningful and, importantly, durable after training ends.
How quickly will I see results? Most clients notice changes between sessions 6 and 12. Meaningful, lasting change typically develops over 20–40 sessions.
Will results last after I stop training? Yes. Unlike medication, neurofeedback teaches the brain to self-regulate — most clients maintain gains for years without ongoing sessions.
Practicalities
How long are sessions? Approximately 45–60 minutes including set-up.
How often should I come? 2–3 times per week is ideal in the early phase. At-home clients often train 4–5 times weekly.
Do you accept insurance? Helix is a cash-pay practice. We provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. Many PPO plans reimburse a portion of costs.
Can I do it at home? Yes — we offer a supervised at-home program using FDA-cleared devices, recommended after an initial in-office phase.
