Neurofeedback for Depression: A New Way to Look at an Old Problem

The neuroscience of depression

One of the most replicated findings in depression research involves frontal lobe alpha asymmetry: people with depression tend to show relatively more alpha activity in the left frontal lobe (associated with approach motivation and positive affect) and relatively less in the right. This pattern correlates with reduced drive, anhedonia, and the characteristic withdrawal and low mood of depression.

This isn't the whole picture of depression — it's a complex disorder with many subtypes and neurological signatures. But for a significant subset of people with depression, this asymmetry is a meaningful target for neurofeedback intervention.

Alpha asymmetry training

Alpha asymmetry neurofeedback trains the brain to reduce left frontal alpha (increasing activation) and/or increase right frontal alpha — gradually correcting the imbalance that contributes to depressive states. Multiple randomized controlled trials have shown significant reductions in depressive symptoms following this type of training, with results that outlast the training period.

For clients with treatment-resistant depression — those who have tried multiple medications with limited success — neurofeedback offers a genuinely different mechanism of action, one that doesn't require tolerating another round of medication side effects.

A complement, not a replacement

Neurofeedback works best for depression when integrated with other evidence-based care — therapy, appropriate medication when indicated, lifestyle interventions. We never recommend discontinuing any prescribed medication, and we work collaboratively with your treating psychiatrist or physician throughout your program.
