At-Home Training

Is At-Home Neurofeedback Right for You? What to Know Before You Start

One of the most common questions we hear from prospective clients is: "Can I just do this at home?" The short answer is yes — and for the right candidate, at-home neurofeedback is one of the most powerful tools we offer. But it works best when it's part of a supervised, clinician-designed program. Here's everything you need to know.

What is at-home neurofeedback?

At-home neurofeedback uses the same core technology as in-office training — brainwave sensors, real-time monitoring, and audio-visual feedback — but delivered through an FDA-cleared portable device that can be used in your own home. At Helix, our at-home clients use a clinician-prescribed device rental program, meaning your protocol is designed by one of our BCN-certified practitioners based on your QEEG brain map.

You're not going rogue — you're training with a device that's configured specifically for your brain, with regular virtual check-ins to monitor your progress and adjust as needed.

Who is a good candidate for at-home training?

What at-home neurofeedback is NOT

At-home neurofeedback is not a substitute for proper clinical assessment. We always begin with an in-office QEEG brain map before transitioning a client to home training. Training the brain without a proper map is like taking medication without a diagnosis — it may do something, but it's not targeting the right place.

We're also cautious about the proliferation of consumer neurofeedback devices that can be purchased online without clinical oversight. Some of these devices use generic, non-personalized protocols that may not address — and could occasionally worsen — specific dysregulation patterns. Our at-home program avoids this by keeping a clinician involved throughout.

How the Helix at-home program works

After your initial QEEG and one or more in-office sessions, your clinician will determine whether you're a good candidate for home training. If so, we provide a device pre-configured with your personal protocol, detailed setup instructions, and a training schedule. Virtual check-ins every few weeks allow us to review your session data, answer questions, and adjust your protocol as your brain responds.

Most at-home clients train 3–5 times per week — more frequently than they could realistically come into the office — which often accelerates progress significantly.
